My Weekend

I actually had a pretty busy weekend. I didn't do much on saturday day but that night, I took Jessmeister to see the Chili Peppers at the forum. As much as a despise this oh-so-80's term, there's just no other way to say it, they were f***ing awesome. They did some amazingly cool stuff including flea doing a big band bit on a trumpet. Instead of just promoting their new album, they did a cool mix of past and present songs with some covers of a couple of 70's songs and one that sounded like a girl pop song from the 50's. The set was spartan black with some simple but cool video backdrop and lighting effects. Fundamentally, it was a group of professionals doing their thing. They were great.

The Flaming Lips opened for them. It was a mixed response from LA. About half the people booed. I was not one of them. Neither was the 20 somethings sitting next to me. We thought they had a fun show, although not quite there yet. The song that I liked best was a cover they did of a white stripe song. The stage show was wacked. I mean, they should have been passing out lsd instead of balloons: people in animal costumes, santa claus tossing ballons, some kid with a light-saber, 2 people in round,blow-up, bouncy costumes. It was oddly japanese in its cartoon effect. I liked that they did political commentary as part of their gig. It was both visual and spoken.

Before the lips was some "band" called Mike Watt and the Secondmen (two guys + a couple of walk ons). They were ok.

On sunday, I went to see the pushkin exhibit at the LACMA. It is closing this week, so it was way over-crowded. I was disappointed in the layout of the exhibit. They didn't have a clear path through the rooms, so you had to look at the dates to see if you were going the right way. Also, since they want everyone to rent the audio tour, they had no commentary on the paintings at all. Still, they brought back Matisse's goldfish and Van Gogh's prison courtyard, 2 of my favorites from the russion impressionist exhibit 20 years ago. Woohoo for me for going by myself and having a good time anyway.
