slogging the hours

Occassionally, I do some after-hours work for a lab over in biology. I've been putting off going over there for a couple of months and I knew that the work had piled up, so I finally committed to showing up for a few weeks of sunday afternoons to get the lab back on track. But I was expecting things along the lines of installing cd-r's and upgrading win98 machines. Instead, last friday morning their main NT file server got hacked. I spent all afternoon sunday rebuilding the OS, monday night installing and configuring their biology specific application licensing, and now I still have to go resolve all of the printing problems. Printing problems, no big deal. Except they got new printers and didn't tell me and their resident programmer-turned-biologist configured the new printers using dhcp instead of static IP's. Go figure that when they had a power outage for the building they had random and mysterious printing problems afterwards. Tomorrow, I will just get all of the NT stuff finished up so that on sunday I can start on a G4 that won't boot, needs firmware updates, possible hardware failure and on and on. At least it's good to be earning my keep.

SoCal Eskimo and DT2 came over to work on computers last night. DT2 wants to know all about computers and SoCal Eskimo has a windows box that was spontaneously rebooting, so it was a fortuitous arrangement. We had a really fun time even though we were working. But I guess DT2's girlfriend took exception to him hanging out with women who weren't her. He looked like he wanted to crawl into a dark cave and hide this morning. The worst part about it is that I doubt that she was upset because she didn't trust him. I'm sure it was just jealousy over the time being spent. That's a tough one, and I feel for him.
