Mar. 18th, 2011 12:45 pm1.75 miles today. It was tough but I did it. I'm proud of myself.
On Wed., DG and I had a good run. The time change really worked in our favor. At 5:30 it was sunny and balmy and my kid was really ok with being out in the stroller. After the run, she ran around in the grassy area where we meet. One of the older kids had climbed a tree. When she saw that, she thought it would be a fine thing to do. So there was my not-yet-2-yr-old out there climbing trees. She was happy and adorable for the first time since I started taking her on the group runs.
It turns out I run faster than everyone else there. On the treadmill I am comfortably running 11 minute miles. Put a little competition in the way and I *might* make a 10 minute mile. I'm not fast by any objective standard, and I have no idea what my speed will be like when we actually get up to 3 miles. Despite reality, people are now coming up to me and asking me how I do it. This poor woman (name unknown) that was chatting me up about this on Wed. night was talking about how puffed she gets. I looked at her and told her she should slow down. Instead, she wants to add weight training and speed training and more training in order to run faster. Now, I'm 45 and 10 (ok, 15) lbs over-weight. This womand looks like she is in her 50's and 20 - 30 lbs over-weight. She just doesn't want to believe that it could take many months before her body is ready to run faster than a 12 min pace. Whatever. But the idea that I am in any way, shape or form a role model in this is completely wacky.

Or as my old aikido sensei would say "They are attracted to your energy." I can imagine meeting you and thinking that you know some secret to life that I don't. I can also imagine your saying "seriously? you're following me?"
