Make the world safe from democracy- read a banned book!

Tomorrow marks the beginning of Banned Books Week, September 20–27. The American Library Association has a list of the 100 most challenged books 1990 - 2000. I, for one, intend to do my part in protecting my First Amendment rights by reading a banned book -- at least I will if I can find one on the list that I haven't already read. Aside from the Judy Blume books and a couple of sex-ed books, it's looking a little bleak.

"The Handmaid's Tale," very cool! I was so traumatized by the movie, I don't think I could manage reading it. You will have to let me know what you think when you're done. Last night I picked up "slaughterhouse five" by kurt vonnegut. I just finished it. It is a most excellent read if you've never read it. Do you bookcross (http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/lisab)? One of my favorite things to do these days is release books into the wild. People rarely make journal entries on the books, but I keep the faith anyway.

So far, I'm liking Handmaid quite a bit. I haven't seen the movie, but I think I'll check it out once I finish the book. It seems like I say this about pretty much every dystopian book I've read recently, but it seems utterly plausible and terribly prescient. I guess that's one of the things that happens when you have a president who doesn't like to read - he doesn't know any of the cautionary tales, so he shows no caution.

I haven't read *any* Vonnegut, which is something I really need to remedy soon. Bookcrossing is another item on my list of stuff I want to do but haven't. Maybe I'll come upon some recently freed Vonnegut before too long...
