I had dinner with my friend Paul last night. We have a regular monday-night-dinner ritual that gets interrupted for months by monday night football. His mother is 84 and likes to beat him out of a dollar once a week. That's cool. We always just pick up where we left off. Only this time life happened when I wasn't watching.

The day after thanksgiving, Paul had a heart attack. It was mild, luckily. And he's the type of guy who literally said to his girlfriend, "I'm going to the hospital to have this chest pain checked out. Be back in a couple of hours." That same weekend, his brother-in-law found his sister unconscious and took her to the hospital. She had a heart attack and a week later was dead.

So he's telling me all of this and I'm looking at him over a plate of zucchini zircles and saying "how come you didn't call me you big lug?" Unbelievable. If he keeps this up I might have to start hanging out at monday night football with him and his mother.

Then there was that whole where to meet next week discussion. After much hmming Paul finally says "Let's get creative here. Where are the good vegetarian restaurants?" I told him the best vegetarian restaurant in town was my house, so I guess I'm going to be doing a lot of cooking in the near future, or at least next week. I promised I'd make him spinach lasagna next week.
