ultrasound
Jan. 7th, 2009 12:15 pmI had an ultra sound this morning as an initial test for down's syndrome. I was lucky this time that it was an outty instead of an inny. My last 2 ultra sounds were both inny's and I can't say enough about how much those suck.
It was an interesting experience. The test for down's via ultra sound has to be done between 11 - 13 weeks. The doctor tries to get a nuchal translucency measurement. My doctor said it's a membrane that covers the neck and spine. However, wikipedia says it is a measurement of the amount of fluid behind the neck. Now that I've done it, all I can say is that it's kind of like consulting a magic 8 ball. The ultra sound doesn't give a clear enough picture to really take an accurate measurement. The conclusion is more like "the signs appear positive."
In all other respects things appear fine. My blood pressure is dead normal. I've gained the right amount of weight (2-4 lbs) and the baby's heartbeat is at a completely acceptable 156. And boy is the little critter active -- flailing the arms and rolling all around.
